Green City Clean Waters and ISS/Red Lion

The Philadelphia Water Departments’ Green City Clean Waters initiative celebrated its five year anniversary in June. The initiative is a 25 year plan to transform the health of the city’s creeks and rivers by utilizing green infrastructure and building living landscapes. Through partnerships with private developers and a grant program, jointly administered by PIDC, the Philadelphia Water Department aims to reduce the stormwater pollution entering our waterways by 85 percent, while adding 9,000 greened acres to Philadelphia and saving the city $5.6 billion dollars. The Green City Clean Waters initiative has already exceeded expectations by creating over 837 greened acres, enough to keep 1.5 billion gallons of polluted rainwater out of our rivers annually.

The Community Design Collaborative and the Philadelphia Department of Commerce invite you to nominate the best storefront façade improvement projects in Philly! Help us show that good design is good business and gain exposure for your business, consulting firm, or favorite neighborhood spot. Winners will be revealed at a special celebration on October 6, 2016.

Nominated projects must be located within the City of Philadelphia and completed between October 2014 and September 2016 to be eligible. There is no cost to nominate a project. The deadline for nominations is September 15, 2016.

Implementation of the Lower Schuylkill Master Plan continues to change the landscape of Philadelphia. The Pennovation Center, a 58,000 square foot business incubator and laboratory, set to open this August is well underway at the northern edge of the master plan’s Innovation District. The University of Pennsylvania has been working to attract tenants to the space and have just announced their first corporate sponsor, Hershey Co. The company will locate its Advanced Technologies & Foresights Lab on the second floor of the building. There Hershey Co. plans to leverage the innovative environment created by university researchers and technology start-ups in order to explore prototypes that fall outside its traditional focus. Operating the space is co-working leader, Benjamin’s Desk and other tenants include Qualcomm Research Philadelphia, Exyn Technologies, and NovapeuticsJust announced two new companies are locating at the Pennovation Center, XEED and Fever Smart, both started by graduates of Penn’s Class of 2016 and winners of Dr. Gutmann’s President’s Innovation Prize.  Continue Reading →

Being the host city for the Democratic National Convention in 2016 has created opportunities for many local businesses. The Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee is committed to diversity and inclusion in the vendors and contractors participating the DNC. Of the $150 million already spent by the committee, most of the money has gone to local businesses owned by women and minorities. Many local, small, minority and woman-owned businesses have been selected to deliver on the wide variety of projects and services needed for the Convention. Businesses like Impact Dimensions, the local Hispanic minority-owned business named to be the merchandise vendor.  Or PIDC client, Cashman & Associates who along with other local firms AEC Partners, ACCESS Philadelphia, Stockton & Partners, Inc. and Perfection Events, Inc. are the event planners for the Convention’s three major parties.
